The Forty-Ninth Day of The Walk
IslandMadison, WI

Started walk at 7:30 a.m.

It was overcast and foggy this morning. Cars were scarce and the streets were pretty quiet.

The Sunday jogging groups were out. I didn't actually see them this morning but I could hear their conversations through the trees.

Chance scared some ducks that were lounging in the watercress. We were on the boardwalk and Chance was prepared to give chase into the stream. Luckily, his ability to strike fear in their gizzards was sufficient satisfaction for his canine honor.

I've mentioned the boardwalk before but I never did describe its construction. It's not like we're talking Atlantic City here. Our boardwalk is made of three 2x6 planks, about 7 feet long, nailed together with 2 foot cross members. These sections are then butted loosely together to create the boardwalk. Whereas the boardwalk is narrow it's preferable than walking in mud.

Island We saw our United States Congressman at the coffee shop this morning. He was with his kid and wasn't wearing a coat. Then again, he drove and I walked. Actually, it wasn't that cold and I walked most of the way without gloves.

The crows were out by the duck pond picking up large slices of bread left by people feeding the ducks. I heard other birds but didn't see them. One song was different and very pretty. Yesterday some people were discussing the possibility of hearing a cardinal and the belief that the bird alters its songs at some time in the Spring. Maybe that was the song I was hearing. Again, more research is needed.

Coffee -- Costa Rican -- Very Good.
Muffin today -- Cranberry -- Moist but not very tart.
